Art Show @ Blue Ridge Community College

I am pleased to announce that I am having an ART SHOW in Virginia...
At the Fine Art Center of Blue Ridge Community College!

"Personal Perspectives: Illustrations by Laura Lee Gulledge"

This show will feature drawings and illustrations that inspired scenes in my upcoming graphic novel "Page by Paige," as well as finished pages from the book itself. I am especially thrilled to show this work in my home state of Virginia because a big theme in the book concerns my longing for the nature I left behind when I moved to New York.

Exhibiting: October 1 – November 15, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 7, 4-6:00pm

BRCC is in Weyers Cave, Virginia...which is just South of Harrisonburg where I went to college. Gallery hours are Mon-Fri 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. More details here. Big thanks to my JMU classmate Jessica Martinkosky (who is now an assistant professor of Fine Art/Ceramics at BRCC) for her help with this exhibit!

Drawn Love Letters: Part 2

Here's the next installment of drawings inspired by my new romance! (Click on image to see larger) I'll try and keep my explanations short and simple...

He's the nut, and I'm the ice cube. Together we somehow help each other break out.

Some kisses are sighs. Some kisses are gasps. But our kisses are like exhaling.

He gave me his sweater the night we were out until sunrise. Not wanting to admit how much I liked him, I was surprised to find myself sleeping in it every night. Yup...sweater spooning.

Drawn Love Letters: Part 1

For YEARS I would post new drawings like these each week. Every week. But my graphic novel and other projects have kept me from putting the necessary time into this activity for the past year or so, and I've been missing this outlet dearly.

SO. Super recently I have found myself totally and unexpectedly fallen in LOVE with a guy. And I decided that THIS would be the perfect opportunity to get back into this old habit of mine, to use my art to get to know this new person and this new side of myself.

I'll be sharing DRAWINGS ABOUT OUR NEW RELATIONSHIP over the coming weeks. I was a bit reluctant to do this because these are EXTREMELY personal, so please view them kindly.

Here are the individual panels so you can read it easier...

In this drawing I wanted to express the feeling of urgency when you meet someone new. You want to express everything and learn everything, like a good book you want to read quickly.

BUT I also feel like we have all the time in the world. That everything moves slower when we're together. That this is a book you want to take your time reading and really enjoy. Hence I drew this next image...

Close-up...

Finally, here is the last drawing I'll share for now:

Here are the individual panels...

I've never met a guy who wore their heart on their sleeve as much as him, and I wanted to illustrate that heartfelt honesty. This is him.

We'll see what happens.

Rocktown Weekly Cover Story

I'M THE COVER STORY THIS WEEK IN ROCKTOWN WEEKLY!

You can read the article "A Real Page-Turner" here. (My character in my graphic novel is named Paige Turner)

This newspaper is based out of Harrisonburg, Virginia, where (in case you didn't know) I attended James Madison University. I also held an art show there at the Artful Dodger back in 2006 while I was living on the other side of the mountain in Charlottesville.

The article is in anticipation of my UPCOMING ART SHOW at Blue Ridge Community College! (October 1st - Nov 15th) More details to come.

Pics: Stranded Tattoo Parlor!

The XXX FORTUNE TELLING TATTOO PARLOR at Stranded on Saturday was a BIG hit! We painted 200 different people over 6 hours. Our booth was pretty popular, having a long line during the entire event. (You can view ALL the photos in Flickr and on Facebook.)

Here is our tattoo parlor crew! From left to right: Juliet Trail, Maja Szychowska, Matt Mikas, Diana Arge, and Me.

When you enter our booth you have your sexual fortune told using a homemade deck of erotic tarot cards. We determine if you will get lucky tonight! (Cards include: The Cowbell, The Jailbait, The Craigslist, The Shit, etc.)

Then you are tattooed with your zodiological sign's sexual position, along with the result of your fortune. You spin a wheel with a golden penis to determine where your tattoo will go! Body painting by 2nd Skin.

Finally, portraits were taken in our Tijuana Bible lined photobooth by Diana...

Tattoo parlor installation

This tattoo parlor for Stranded is the first time I've organized a big project like this, and I must say I'm rather proud of how great it's all been!

We were the first group to install our project in this amazing 47,000 square foot space in Sunset Park. And it amazingly turned out EXACTLY like my sketch, going up smoothly in just a few sweaty hours!

Who else is excited about Saturday!?

More pics will be coming after the party!
